Achieving Meaningful Use Requirements

Patient Safety

Lack of CPOE Testing Can Cause Potentially Life-Threatening Errors

Between June 2008 and January 2010, 214 urban, rural and pediatric hospitals participated in a Leapfrog Group CPOE system study. CPOE systems were tested with 10 test patients and 50 medication orders that would result in ADEs. As part of the study, some of the test orders would result in potentially fatal medication errors. Test results showed that the CPOE systems failed to catch a substantial number of the potential ADEs and fatal medication errors.
